How to Plant an Avocado at Home: Step by Step Guide

Would you like to have fresh avocados at home? In Salsa Agricola, we show you how to plant an avocado at home in a simple way. Go on our guide and enjoy this delicious fruit grown by yourself.

1. Seed Preparation

To get started, you will need a avocado pit:

  1. Wash the bone: Remove the pit from an avocado and wash it well to remove all the pulp.
  2. Insert chopsticks: Put three or four chopsticks around the bone to suspend it over a glass of water, with the pointed part facing up and the base submerged in water.
2. Germination

Now, wait for the germinating bone:

  1. Change the water: Change the water every few days to keep it clean.
  2. Watch the growth: After 2 to 6 weeks, the bone will open and a root will begin to emerge. When the root has some 10 cm, it will be ready to plant.
3. Plant the Avocado in a Pot

Once germinated, it’s time to plant the avocado:

  1. Select the pot: Use a pot of about 20 cm in diameter with good drainage.
  2. Plant the bone: Fill the pot with rich land and place the bone with the root down, leaving the top exposed.
  3. Water well: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
4. Avocado Care

To ensure good growth:

  1. Sun light: Place the pot in a Sunny place, since avocados need a lot of light.
  2. Irrigation: Keep the wet land, watering regularly, but without excess.
  3. Pruning: Prune the upper leaves when the plant reaches about 30 cm tall to encourage bushier growth.
